We sculpt geometric volumes that represent the exact shape (silhouette, and interior) of the final rendered hair primitives. This workflow changed the direction of the grooming workflow at Disney Animation and is still used to this day. I started R&D for this workflow, first, on the short film Glago on the main character. We then continued to R&D the workflow on the film Bolt on a few important characters. Bolt proved successful enough to embrace the workflow entirely for the film Tangled. It uses a single four channel texture for six of the input’s needed in the shader. The only other texture is an rgb normal map for the tangent input. This included optimizing them to run in Unreal Engine, real time VR, at 60 frames per second. In the beginning of the short, the visual style is a familiar world and characters that you know from the film, ‘Frozen 2’. The story then proceeds to envelope you into a stylized extension of the ‘Frozen 2’ mythos. Premiered at the November 2019 “Frozen 2 Red Carpet Premiere” at the El Capitan theater in Hollywood, CA.
